No, dogs can’t eat lobster.

Lobster meat is very tasty, but it’s also very high in cholesterol and sodium.

Although it’s not poisonous, lobster is not healthy for dogs to eat.

Why is lobster bad for dogs?

1. High Sodium Content

The chief problem is lobster its high content in sodium.

In large quantities, sodium can be dangerous for dogs.

It can damage a dog’s kidneys, cause coma, and even death.

Even when the amount of lobster ingested isn’t life-threatening, it is still likely to cause adverse effects.

For example, excess thirst and repeated urination are symptoms of sodium ion poisoning in dogs.

2.  High Cholesterol & Fat Content

Lobster contains a lot of fat and cholesterol.

The major concern with fatty foods for dogs is that they can induce pancreatitis, which is the inflammation of the pancreas.

This condition is very painful and potentially fatal for dogs.

Feeding your dog fat-rich seafood on a regular basis can lead to obesity.

Excessive weight is associated with osteoarticular problems, heart disease, and increased blood pressure.


Just like humans, dogs can be allergic to shellfish.

The most common symptoms associated with this allergy are diarrhea and skin rash.

My recommendation is not to feed your dog lobster, but if you do so offer only a very small amount.

Lobster Shells

Dogs cannot have lobster shells.

They are sharp and hard material that might lacerate your dog’s oral cavity and esophagus, or even perforate his intestinal tract.

If your dog ate a lobster shell you should contact your veterinarian immediately for a consult.

Important facts to provide your vet are how much lobster shells did your dog eat, when did it happen and what are your dog´s general state: Is he depressed? Is he vomiting? There is any blood on his feces?

In conclusion, dogs and lobster are not a good combination due to lobster’s high content in sodium and fat and its potential to cause allergies.
